Say what you will about Ryan Adams’ music, his writing for BlackBook has been thoroughly engaging and unique from the majority of musician-turned journalist stuff we’ve seen. In his recent interview with legendary singer/songwriter Marianne Faithfull, it’s hard to tell who is interviewing whom. The pair talks about their drug addictions, stage fright and love.
When Faithfull says, “I have tremendous stage fright, and I can see why I used drugs and alcohol,” Adams excitedly relates to the affliction. After all, he once wrote an entire article about his struggle with stage fright (can’t find the link at the moment, but if you can help, please email me!) and Adams told Rolling Stone in January that his battle with performance anxiety contributed to his step back from music.
The best part is when they reminisce on their mutual admiration. “Oh, honey, we would have been perfect together,” Faithfull told Adams, adding, “We fell in love, Ryan… I looked into your eyes and I thought, ‘This is a soulmate.’”
