Admittedly, this is a re-post (sorta) of an earlier mention about Terrible Thrills Vol. 1, an album of Steel Train covers performed by 24B faves Holly Miranda, Nellie McKay, Amanda Palmer, and Deradoorian, as well as actress/singers Alia Shawkat and Scarlett Johansson. Though the album was streaming on MySpace briefly, tracks were taken down all too shortly thereafter. Shawkat’s performance, in particular, grabbed my attention as our love for Arrested Development (and Dr. Fünke’s 100% Natural Good-Time Family Band Solution) just won’t die and it’s nice to hear the Maeby Fünke actress move on from Teamocil songs. In a track-by-track description of the album, Steel Train’s Jack Antonoff said:
[Shawkat] took this song, which is a completely unhinged loud moment on the album, and turned it into something that sounds like it came out of a speakeasy in the early 1900s… i was pushing her to make it a dance remix thing, and she kept insisting on a ragtime vibe. we recorded it at midnight, just a piano and vocal.
Stream her take on “S.O.G. Burning in Hell,” as well as covers by ScarJo, Amanda Palmer, and Nellie McKay (did you hear about her new album?) below:
