In an interview for Chris Isaak’s new performance/talk show on the Biography Channel, Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin of The Smashing Pumpkins talked about the unique interaction they have with their fans. Here’s part of the exchange:
Chris Isaak: I watch your fans and they’re not just fans. They’re really intense.
Billy Corgan: Fanatic. Yeah, they really don’t like us. That’s the funny part.
Chris Isaak: What do you mean?
Jimmy Chamberlin: Yeah, I mean, I think they need something to hate and they found that in us.
Chris Isaak: What does that mean? They’re your fans: They show up at the show, they buy a ticket, your records.
Billy Corgan: You know, but it’s like I used to buy… you could throw the baseball and dump the clown in the water. I think that’s sort of our relationship at this point.
Chris Isaak: Do they come to the show and say angry things?
Billy Corgan: Oh yeah.
Chris Isaak: I don’t know about this… you actually have people come and say you didn’t play the song I want or you didn’t…
Billy Corgan: No, it’s a whole movement. It’s a whole movement of anger. It is not just one person.
