A number of fun summer mixes have caught my eye lately (Danger Mouse’s “Endless Summer Playlist,” Flavorwire’s “Timeless Beach Albums,” and Yewknee’s epic “Summer Mix Series” to name a few), but leave it up to Jens Lekman to add another interesting theme to the, um, mix. In the Smalltalk section on Lekman’s official site, the Swedish singer/songwriter revealed that he was so inspired after remixing Au Revoir Simone’s “Shadows” from 4/4 to 3/4 time that he began hunting for songs in that time signature:
It was all a big swirl. After a while I heard it everywhere. In soul ballads, in polyrhythmical african pop, in old movies. In the ocean waves tumbling in against the shore, in the beat of a lovers heart. One two three, one two three…
Lekman’s “Summer in 3/4 Time” mix begins with the aforementioned “Shadows” remix before venturing off into a collection of pop songs, audio clips from films, a remix of the Morning Benders’ instant classic “Excuses,” and an abstract sample of John Denver’s “Annie’s Song” for the coda. You can download the file here, but Jens’ servers have been crawling all morning, so here’s a Soundcloud copy for now. Check out the tracklist and stream below:
