Not sure why this just made a blip on my radar now (it actually hit the interwebs over a week ago), but José González somehow found time amid his Junip reunion and documentary project to record an impressive new tune for a video game soundtrack. In addition to William Elliot Whitmore, Jamie Lidell, Bill Elm, and Woody Jackson, the team behind Old West-themed game Red Dead Redemption tapped our favorite nylon string-wielding, Gothenburg singer/songwriter for a partial score. The result is reminiscent of Sun Kil Moon’s “Heron Blue,” the so-called “theme song” to gamer favorite Gears of War 3 (there’s just something about mellow, solo acoustic tunes that makes virtual violence more dramatic).
