Anaïs “Video Killed the Radio Star” from Manny Marquez on Vimeo.
I was perusing director Manny Marquez’s excellent Vimeo channel earlier in the week — particularly two unplugged performances by Little Joy in an old cabin in LA’s Echo Park — when a video from a few weeks back caught my eye: Nouvelle Vague’s Anaïs Croze covering the Buggles’ famous 1979 single “Video Killed the Radio Star.”
Croze’s version exchanges Trevor Horn’s synthesizer backup band for a carefully-arranged string section, and his expressionless turn in the classic video for a fun trip around Echo Park, portable turntable in tow. Shot with an old school 16mm camera, watch Marquez and Croze’s take on the first song/video ever to be played on MTV above.
