When Trent Reznor’s then-fiancée Mariqueen Maandig split with her band, West Indian Girl, last summer, we speculated that the pair might collaborate, what with Nine Inch Nails in pseudo-retirement and all. Now Reznor may not have turned out to be behind the Iamamiwhoami conspiracy, but there are some signs that the former NIN mastermind has teamed up with his wife for a similarly mysterious album release roll-out…
“Self-titled 6-track EP out this summer,” read a cryptic email sent out by a publicist to Consequence of Sound, Amateur Chemist, and others. “Exact date TBA.” Dubbed How To Destroy Angels, the enigmatic new group has set up an official site with the above image and teaser video below.
Here’s where the Reznor/Maandig possibility comes in: the music/cinematography in the video simply reeks of Reznor and the woman in the photo (with her eyes censored) bears a striking resemblance to Maandig, not to mention the logo definitely looks like the work of Rob Sheridan. As Amateur Chemist notes, Maandig tweeted about one of the keyboards from the video in February.
Is this just an internet hoax or does the old saying, “where there’s smoke there’s fire,” ring true? Check out the video here or below, and let the mystery begin:
