Alt-country singer/songwriter Lissie may have cut through last month’s glut of Lady Gaga covers with her brilliant take on “Bad Romance,” but the Los Angeles-based (by way of Illinois) rising solo star was only previewing the true range of her considerable cover song skills: Lissie has now taken on Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters” from their classic 1991 Black Album.
Thats right, dance pop to heavy metal. What’s more, it appears that Lissie and her band filmed both live performances in a single day. We could ramble on about notable bits from either of these clips, but what stands out most to me is how much more nuanced Lissie’s voice is compared to the original performers. From the softer sections to belting out the high notes, I, for one, would rather hear Lissie channel James Hetfield’s angst than Hetfield himself. Now all she needs are some pyrotechnics.
