As we mentioned late last week, Fiona Apple, producer/songwriter/mad genius Jon Brion, Gillian Welch, and many more took the stage of Los Angeles’ Largo at the Coronet this past Saturday night for the “Love and Haiti, Too” benefit concert, which raised funds for Save the Children’s operations in Haiti.
Reviews of the concert have been scarce, so I’ve been hoping that at least some footage would make its way onto the internets, and it finally has. Apple and her longtime collaborator Jon Brion played “He’s Funny That Way,” an old jazz standard made famous by the likes of Billie Holiday, Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and Nat King Cole to name a few.
It’s a great take, of course, though I’m still partial to last year’s Cy Coleman cover a bit. Perhaps the follow-up to 2005’s Extraordinary Machine (if there ever is one!) will be a jazz standards covers record. Either way, this performance will have to suffice for now…
