As we mentioned recently, Phish have launched a teaser site displaying all the possible albums the band might play as a “musical costume” for their traditional Halloween cover album set. At that time, surprising nominees included Arcade Fire’s Funeral, the White Stripes’ Elephant, Radiohead’s Kid A, and MGMT’s Oracular Spectacular. Phish have been regularly drawing bloody axes, knives, and arrows buried into the displayed album art, however, and much of the list has been narrowed down (or “murdered,” as the case may be).
The White Stripes, Arcade Fire, Pixies, Tom Waits, and many more have gotten the axe, but MGMT and Radiohead are still alive. Current front-runners (according to some random clues and speculation) include Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run, which has been altered by Trey Anastasio’s custom Languedoc guitar replacing The Boss’ signature Tele, Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and Prince’s Purple Rain.
Halloween will be a long night for Phish fans at Festival 8 in Indio, CA next weekend, but at least they’ll wake up to coffee, donuts, and the band’s first ever all acoustic set the following morning. Meanwhile, for more cover album speculation, grab your bong and head thataway.
