Not only have all the singles covered on the Pitch Perfect soundtrack topped the charts at one time or another, but now the a cappella renditions performed in the movie are sitting atop the iTunes OST chart as well. It’s been years since Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone” blew up, and — in a testament to the original’s hook and rousing trajectory — Ester Dean & Skylar Astin’s take seems to have revitalized the nearly decade-old pop tune. Stars such as Rihanna, Bruno Mars, and Jessie J also got the vocal-only covers treatment, while stars from the acting world revealed some impressive vocal chops, too.
Oscar-nominated actress Anna Kendrick’s onscreen version of “Cups” — a song she performed when auditioning for the project — made it onto the soundtrack as a solo performance alongside group cuts featuring the Barden Bellas and the Treblemakers.
Fun fact: “Cups” is actually Lulu and the Lampshade’s rework of “You’re Gonna Miss Me,” and it seems Kendrick was inspired by Anna Burden’s excellent YouTube performance of the song we listed on our top cover songs roundup last year. If you enjoyed the film soundtrack take on “Cups” over the weekend, we highly recommend visiting Burden’s at the aforementioned link.
Without further ado, an official preview of the songs from Pitch Perfect is below:
