Not long ago, Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner dished on some of the band’s plans for their 5th album to Artrocker, telling the magazine that the Sheffield quartet plan to “to go the direction of those heavier tunes.” In addition to citing Suck It And See cuts “Don’t Look Down ‘Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair” and “Brick By Brick,” Turner said the most exemplary track to foreshadow their next step would be 2012 single “R U Mine?”.
Now recording has reportedly begun in California, despite his initial motive of hitting the studio in their hometown. According to a reliable fan source, ArcticMonkeysUS, the band are currently back in their old Humbug stomping grounds of Joshua Tree, CA, putting new material to tape. While at first we were going to put this story in the unconfirmed rumor pile, an even more reliable update has now come by way of the least likely person: drummer Matt Helders’ mother, Jill Helders. Writing on Twitter in response to the report, she said:
“I don’t know if it helps to clear things up but lads are in the desert!”
Have the Monkeys also re-teamed with Humbug producer/Queens of the Stone Age leader Josh Homme? It seems probable given that Joshua Tree is his hometown and recording base. We’ll keep you updated when more becomes available, but in the meantime, get psyched ’cause LP5 is underway.
