Watching the recent documentary Gasland this week was not only an eye-opening experience, but the excellent score and soundtrack piqued interest as well. During one particularly poignant moment, writer/director Josh Fox used Radiohead’s “4 Minute Warning,” a foreboding cut off the band’s In Rainbows LP. There’s just something in Thom Yorke’s voice that conveys a keen sense of both indignation and sadness, fitting perfectly with the viewer experience of learning about this problematic (at best) and catastrophic (at worst) industry.
Also notable with regard to this soundtrack cut is the fact that Radiohead rarely allow their songs to be used in films, save for documentaries — ones that usually provide an enlightening look at a cause they support. The best current example of this would be the new film The Island President, for which they contributed a whopping 14 tracks. That film follows the plight of the president of the Republic of Maldives as he strives to prevent his country from being buried underwater due to climate change.
As for Gasland, the Radiohead’s song is a mere side note in terms of the film’s relevance. Here’s hoping noting this tune here will encourage more people to check it out — it isn’t an easy doc to watch, but it’s important for that very reason.
