It’s been two years since the announcement that Al Pacino would play music legend/convicted murderer Phil Spector in a new HBO film written by David Mamet, and now our first glimpse at his interpretation is here: Today the official trailer arrived for the flick, simply titled Phil Spector, complete with co-starring performances by Helen Mirren as Spector’s lawyer during the Lana Clarkson murder trial and Arrested Development‘s Jeffrey Tambor.
Per the clips compiled for the teaser, the movie centers on events that illustrate Spector’s well-documented moments of rage — from a notorious story where he supposedly drew a handgun during a recording session to the alleged incidents that led to Clarkson’s death at his home in 2003. This type of dramatic fare should come easy for Pacino, but whether he will bring more nuance to the role or if Mamet’s screenplay chooses to examine how Spector’s work in music might intertwine with the tragic elements of his later years remains to be seen. The film premieres on March 24th. For now, watch one of the best actors alive portray the troubled man behind the boards of countless great records above.
