Not unlike director/writer Greg Mottola’s 2009 film Adventureland, Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower soundtrack summons a deluge of welcome nostalgia to these ears. Given that Mottola’s film is set in 1987 while the latter takes place in the early ’90s — not to mention they both feature a David Bowie standout — that shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone following along this site for a few months. On their own, they both make fine mixtapes for the era in which my generation grew up, but combined they just might be essential to anyone born during (or after) the Clinton administration.
Albeit short on grunge, Sonic Youth could be considered a forebear to that movement, which began around the time of the Emma Watson, Logan Lerman, Ezra Miller, and Paul Rudd-starring film.
