Official videos comprised of live footage are one of the more common visual elements released by bands nowadays, but here are two reasons the Black Keys’ new “Little Black Submarines” clip stands out from the rest: the format is particularly apt for a recent live favorite and, more importantly, Danny Clinch directed it. Filmed at Nashville’s renown Springwater Supper Club, the video finds the duo behind El Camino revisiting a scene similar to their humble beginnings, performing for an intimate audience at a small club like the pair’s pre-stadium days. As he’s done many times in the past for Bruce Springsteen and a host of others, Clinch finds an angle on the show that’s raw enough to capture the energy of the room — no short feat, all limitations of the format considered. So, without further ado, here’s a fine way to revisit one of our favorite cuts off the Black Keys’ new record above.
