Not your usual holiday set, Everything But the Girl’s Tracey Thorn has borrowed songs from an impressive list of artists on her upcoming Christmas album, Tinsel and Lights. Among the 12-track release are cuts by a number of favorites (many of which were originally secular, non-holiday tunes) re-imagined for December festivities, including the Meg White-sung, White Stripes song “In the Cold, Cold Night,” Sufjan Stevens’ “Sister Winter” and Joni Mitchell’s “River.”
Thorn did pen two originals, though, writing own title track and opening the set with her new tune “Joy.” Traditional piece “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” makes an appearance, as well as Magnetic Fields leader Stephin Merritt’s “Like a Snowman” and another frosty pick, Randy Newman’s “Snow.”
Ordinarily we might not hold our breath for this type of fare (save for Bob Dylan’s “It Must Be Santa,” which remain an unlikely bit of seasonal fun), but given the brilliant taste in material culled here and Thorn’s ever-interesting output, we’re adding this one to the roster of late-2012 must-listens.
