Last week we heard the studio version for the title track to Patti Smith’s new album, Banga, and now the live rendition has hit screens across the country via Smith’s return to the Late Show with David Letterman. Complete with a drummer multi-tasking as a barking dog (an allusion to the canine in Mikhail Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita that the tune was named after), longtime right-hand man Lenny Kaye, and a wholly original cut that channels the avant-rock/poetry scene where she first found musical roots, Smith’s latest appearance was about as memorable as ever — save, perhaps, for her ’98 take on “Because the Night”.
