After years on the shelf, an excellent document of performances at the famous Los Angeles club Largo has surfaced. Although the film premiered back in 2008 at the L.A. Film Festival before a short run at other festivals, it’s sat in relative obscurity ever since. Now Largo have shared the eponymous film for free online, featuring a host of notable artists, comedians, and musicians taking advantage of the venue’s uniquely intimate atmosphere.
Also of note is that Largo is well-known for the melting pot community of artists it fostered, a one-of-a-kind scene Ethan Johns discussed at length with us in 2012. Jon Brion — perhaps the most regular guest of the Largo stage — is featured heavily, semi-improvising instrumentals and backing up Fiona Apple for a stirring rendition of (my favorite Fiona cut) “I Know” about 10 minutes in. Other performers include comedians Zach Galifianakis Patton Oswalt,Flight of the Conchords, and Louis CK (around the 1-hour mark), as well as musicians Andrew Bird, Nickel Creek, and many more.
