I first heard Neko Case’s cover of Harry Nilsson’s “Don’t Forget Me”—off his John Lennon-produced album Pussy Cats—at this year’s Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, not even realizing that a gorgeous studio version was also on her latest album Middle Cyclone (one of those records I was so sure would kill that I held off putting it on, hoarding it until a new music drought came along).
Appearing on Elvis Costello’s “Spectacle” alongside Sheryl Crow, Ron Sexsmith, and Jesse Winchester, Case had the other four sit out for a tune while she belted out a showstopping performance of the sad (and funny) cover. My favorite part is when the camera catches an impromptu smirk from Winchester as Case sings, “I’ll miss you when I’m lonely / I’ll miss the alimony too.”
