English trio Peggy Sue build from a doo-wop template on their new single, “Longest Day of the Year Blues,” punching up the chorus with modern, compression-smeared cymbal hits. The throwback style aside, it’s a simple, bittersweet dose of moving breakup balladry at its core, yet refreshing to hear a band prove such tried-and-true formulas can still move in fresh ways. The full album, Choir of Echoes, is out on January 28th via Yep Roc Records.
