It was hard to pick a favorite cut from the new 826 Valencia benefit album, You Be My Heart, but now that we’ve singled out one finalist (Mark Kozelek’s excellent contribution), here’s the other: Devon Reed’s “Prove Myself,” an unapologetically ingratiating piece performed by Horse Feathers. As with much of their original material and on their 2010 take on Nirvana’s “Drain You” (still one of the best covers ever), the Portland band have a knack for evoking romantic sensitivity from lyrics not inherently lending themselves to a swoon. Be sure to make it to the second verse when the strings come in and get hooked above. You Be My Heart is out now.
