Ever since Willis Earl Beal’s “Call me and I will sing you a song” project, we had a feeling he’d be a prolific artist. Now, with the paint barely dry on this year’s short film and his fall sophomore record, Nobody knows., comes more proof that he’s brimming with solid new material. “Babble on.” is a cut he shared today alongside “Coriander Tree Life.” While the latter track — a loop-laden head-trip — feels more like a sketch of a tune, “Babble on.” wouldn’t be out of place on either of Beal’s previous LPs. To my ears, it splits the difference well between the intimate, hushed folk of his first track, “Evening’s Kiss,” and the hints of gospel-soul in much of his second album. Either way, double-tracked vocals and delicate fingerpicking are a lovely match for Beal on this one. Hear it above.
