It’s been awhile since a waltz has crossed the radar, which is a shame really, given how well that simple triple time signature can cajole subtle beauty from a melody. Jens Lekman was once so taken by 3/4 that he made a — now perennial favorite — summer waltz mix. And then, of course, there’s Elliott Smith, whose pair of XO waltzes (“#2” and “#1”) have taken a sullen place today on the 10th anniversary of his passing. I’ve been a bit down and out this morning, thinking about Elliott, but this new Bec Sandridge waltz helps. She’s from a small town south of Sydney, Australia, yet this cut from her Wild Heart EP finds her on the road “from New York’s streets to London’s rain,” trying to connect to a loved one back home through a few “sad, old songs on the radio.” Check it out above and stream the full EP below:
