July’s “California” would fit so seamlessly on a record like So Tonight That I Might See, it dispelled any doubt Hope Sandoval and David Roback had missed a step in the 17-year interim since their last LP as Mazzy Star. Seasons of Your Day is streaming via NPR today, though, and it appears the single was chosen for that very purpose. This set covers a bit broader range than the pair’s earlier work, from the laid-back, back porch of its Bert Jansch-featured “Sparrow” to soulful dream-pop on “In the Kingdom,” which — as Will Hermes rightly notes — invokes “Tracks of My Tears” to upbeat effect. That track is my favorite, just after “California.” Hear it above and preview the whole thing here.
