Willis Earl Beal followed last month’s excellent “Too Dry To Cry” today with one of the more anticipated cuts due for his sophomore LP: “Coming Through,” featuring Cat Power. Once again, Beal sticks to a bare-bones setup here with drums, guitar, and charismatic lead vox being the only support needed for what’s shaping up to be a soulful step forward from his lo-fi debut, Acousmatic Sorcery. This time around, though, Beal strikes an uplifting chord in contrast to the last track’s foreboding gospel-soul plea. As Spin points out, Chan Marshall knows this territory well (e.g. The Greatest, or a number of cuts on her covers records), making today’s collaboration a notably seamless effort. Hear the tune above and pick up the album, Nobody knows., on September 10th via XL.
