“Demons” is the second track on the National’s new record, Trouble Will Find Me, and our first studio taste of the LP due next month. Between statements from the band (“It just feels like we’ve embraced the chemistry we have.”) and recent live previews, an almost nostalgic focus on the formula they’ve honed over the course of making six records seemed imminent. “Demons” delivers just that, complete with a lyric possibly referencing their Alligator LP, a great piece of Leonard Cohen-esque nostalgia from Matt Berninger (“I’m going through an awkward phase / I am secretly in love with / Everyone that I grew up with”), and a building arrangement always welcome from these guys.
