We’ve heard a few tracks from the new Iron & Wine record, Ghost On Ghost, but now it’s here to preview in full via NPR. Turns out those cuts — “Lovers’ Revolution” and “Grace for Saints and Ramblers” — were exemplary of the LP’s genre-bending (jazz, funk, folk, et al.) approach as a whole, while Beam’s acoustic live take on opener “Caught in the Briars” found a breezy groove in the studio. The talented roster of guest musicians on this thing is incredible, from Lounge Lizards members Kenny Wolleson, Tony Garnier, Curtis Fowlkes, Steve Bernstein, and Doug Wieselman to horn/string arrangements by Tin Hat Trio’s Rob Burger, among others. Beam’s more hushed material has always thrived on organic underpinnings, and given how well this 11-piece translates that to a more colorful palette here, you’d think they were in the band all along.
