Chicago songwriter Mike Kinsella has a pair of projects due as the weather warms this spring and summer: Owen — his main vehicle since 2001 — will release a 7th LP on July 2nd preceded by an EP on Record Store Day (4/20), while Their/They’re/There — a newly formed trio with Evan Weiss and Matthew Frank — will drop their debut EP and LP on those same dates. Per recent previews, both offer a feast for fans of melodic electric guitar. His intimate acoustic side might sit out this round, it seems, as Kinsella branched out with more collaborators in the studio: “In the past I’ve stifled a bunch of my influences and leaned on a couple consistently,” he says discussing the Owen record (via Exclaim), “but this time I just let each song happen as I heard them and had a lot of fun trying some new things.” Hear Owen’s “Bad Blood” from the L’Ami du Peuple record above (via Spin) and Their/They’re/There’s self-titled EP track “Concession Speech Writer” here. Both are due via Polyvinyl.
