New Orleans songwriter/slide-guitar player Luke Winslow-King challenged my resistance to what some deem “retro” this week with the title track from his upcoming Bloodshot Records release. Traditional southern influences abound on the cut, hanging over its timely refrain like Scott Joplin’s century-old “Weeping Willow.” What pulls “The Coming Tide” toward being greater than the sum of its parts, though, are Esther Rose on harmony/call-and-response vox and its arrangement, which moves from jittery incantations to getting carried out to sea via brass baritone seeping in after the 1-minute mark. Hear it above.
