On May 20th, the National will release the follow-up to 2010’s High Violet: a self-produced LP titled Trouble Will Find Me. Among the record’s 13 tracks is “I Need My Girl,” a subdued tune we heard in early stages a few years back.
In a statement, singer Matt Berninger and guitarist Aaron Dessner describe the set as a confident step forward after their decade-long pursuit “to prove something,” culminating on tours for the last album. “[O]ur ideas would immediately click with each other,” says Dessner of sessions for LP6. “It’s free-wheeling again. The songs on one level are our most complex, and on another they’re our most simple and human. It just feels like we’ve embraced the chemistry we have.”
Trouble Will Find Me was mixed primarily by Craig Silvey, whose notable credits include mixing Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs, while longtime collaborator Peter Katis worked on the track “Sea of Love.” Check out the tracklist and revisit the band’s first sketch of “I Need My Girl” below:
