Sad, sad news this morning: Chunklet reports and Secretly Canadian confirms that Jason Molina of Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co. passed away over the weekend from natural causes. He was 39. “This is especially hard for us to share,” writes his label. “Jason is the cornerstone of Secretly Canadian. Without him there would be no us — plain and simple. His singular, stirring body of work is the foundation upon which all else has been constructed.” SC’s statement also includes a synopsis of Molina’s many notable releases — read it in full here. Molina was one of our best singer-songwriters, leaving behind recordings so heartfelt and steeped in insight of the human condition that they feel like bittersweet words from beyond the grave today. Here are just a few among many of his tunes that feel appropriate to revisit in this mournful moment. “Heart My Heart” was one of his last released tracks:
“Didn’t It Rain” (2002)
“Heart My Heart” (2012)
“Hold On Magnolia” (2003)
