Last year’s excellent “Song For Zula” suggested Matthew Houck explored a new sonic palette (synths, drum machine samples, etc.) for the next Phosphorescent LP, but after a half-dozen spins of Muchacho today, it seems this record drew on a range of expansive scenery, both fresh and familiarly organic. Aside from the single, which remains a standout of the year, early personal favorites include the slow-to-mid-tempo ballads “Terror In The Canyons (The Wounded Master)” at 13:00, “A New Anhedonia” at 26:50, and “Down To Go” at 38:00.
