Here’s our second taste of the Strokes’ new album, Comedown Machine, in which the band rein in recent unexpected turns by heading back to the reliable old-school palette (duel guitars, Julian’s “This sound needs to have its tie loosened” vocals, and deceptively simple hooks) beloved on earlier records. As a fan of hearing these guys explore a fresh direction and the classic Strokes sound, this cut and the ’80s-inspired “One Way Trigger,” considered as a pair, bode well for the LP leaning toward either urge. Perhaps that duel approach is what they want to convey ahead of March 26th, as a few minutes ago the band condensed the tracks to a single preview player. Spin both sides above.
