Daughter previewed their 2013-due LP over the summer with an impressive new single, “Smother,” out now backed by this B-side version of “Run.” Last year, the tune found a grassroots audience in its solo-acoustic form centered around Elena Tonra’s vocals, but now it’s been set amid a more complex, atmospheric backdrop on the full-band recording. Both takes have their strengths, but upon a dozen spins, this one seems to leaves further room for growth upon repeated listens. Fortunately for the emerging UK trio, the fact that there’s a discussion boiling about the better rendition — this demo or above — is a good sign that word of mouth is just getting started. (Last night’s Late Show performance should help, too.) Daughter are on tour in the U.S. all October and a debut for 4AD is on the way.
