Last fall, we heard some troubling yet hopeful news that Magnolia Electric Co.’s Jason Molina is on the mend from health issues, undergoing treatment in West Virginia despite a struggle to cover medical bills. His family launched a donation drive for Molina, the result of which, he says, “has been better than I could have ever imagined.” Though still in treatment, Molina wrote on his official site in May: “Finally, there are actually some musical projects on the distant radar screen, but for those who understand, I am taking this in much smaller steps than I’m used to.”
In addition to funds collected by direct donation, 10% of proceeds from a new art book and record are going to the cause, as well. Titled From Black Sheep Boys To Bill Collectors, the hardcover collection features artwork by William Schaff, whose work we’ve seen covering albums by Okkervil River, Molina’s Songs: Ohia project, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and others. Included is an introduction written by the Mountain Goats’ John Darnielle with other contributions penned by Will Sheff and Darren Jackson of Kid Dakota. Molina also recorded 8 solo songs specifically for the project a few years ago, which will arrive bundled with the book on 10″ vinyl as Autumn Bird Songs.
Graveface Records exceeded their Kickstarter goal to publish the set in January, and earlier this month a release date, September 25th, and album info were announced. There isn’t an order link online yet, but we’ll update when it becomes available. In the meantime, check out official streams of two songs alongside the tracklist below:
