Turns out Jenny Lewis isn’t the only member of the Saddle Creek crowd with a film score on the way: An update on one of those new songs we heard Conor Oberst unveil live over the summer, “You Are Your Mother’s Child,” arrived earlier this month along with news of a larger film project from fellow Bright Eyes collaborators Mike Mogis and Nate Walcott. Writers, the feature-length debut from writer/director Josh Boone, features an original score by Mogis and Walcott, as well as said Oberst tune penned specifically for the film.
“Bright Eyes has been one of my favourite bands since Fevers And Mirrors came out,” Boone told the Playlist early in September at the Toronto International Film Festival. “So when I met with the music supervisor for the first time, he said, ‘Who’s your dream [to score the Writers]?’ And I was like, ‘The Bright Eyes guys.’ And somehow he helped make that happen.”
Starring Greg Kinnear, Kristen Bell, and Jennifer Connolly, Writers is a romantic drama centered around the relationships of an acclaimed author and his family. In keeping with the film’s literary theme, Stephen King makes a cameo as himself.
Details on when the movie hits theaters are still forthcoming, but in the meantime, Oberst performed his contribution among a 4-song set for Minnesota Public Radio last week. You can stream his full set here and/or just the new cut below:
