Following her subdued new solo cut and a few covers comes Karen O’s latest one-off project: “Strange Love,” the closing credits song to Tim Burton’s new feature-length Frankenweenie remake. Along with the Cure’s Robert Smith, Winona Ryder, the Flaming Lips and others, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman contributed an original tune to the soundtrack, drawing inspiration from Burton’s famous use of calypso-style Harry Belafonte recordings in Beetlejuice. The result finds O going more twee than we’ve heard since her work on the Where the Wild Things Are soundtrack, complete with a whimsical arrangement you might expect from an “unconventional unconditional-love song” in an animated flick. Even the theremin solo is a fun touch. Hear the track, which premiered on BBC Radio 6 tonight, at Fake Walls.
