While we wait for the Avett Brothers’ new album, The Carpenter, to arrive in full, Seth Avett has shared a fond remembrance of the late, great Doc Watson. In the piece for Garden & Gun, he tells a true story of meeting the legend himself after fellow North Carolina musician Wayne Hayes invited Avett’s father to visit Watson at his home. His father — perhaps knowing the experience would be invaluable for the future folk star — handed down the opportunity to his son.
All told, this is the best eulogy to hit the web yet, for both Avett’s heartfelt, articulate approach and his ability to separate the man from the myth while leaving his iconic status intact, if not in more statuesque shape. Check it out here.
