Yet another lovelorn backstory from Jens Lekman arrived today. Turns out he wrote the title track to I Know What Love Isn’t after talking to a friend about getting married in Melbourne, Australia to gain citizenship. Feeling cynical about romance at the time, he found a moment of comfort in the utilitarian approach. “The problem was,” Lekman says in the Guardian performance clip above, “that in order for this to work I would never be able to tell the story. I would have to keep it a secret forever, and that didnt really work for me… because I’m Jens Lekman. So I wrote this song about it and left the country.” The lyrics are even more blunt than that in parts, and because he’s Jens Lekman, it’s charming.
