Be it James Murphy’s oft-mentioned “Sara” obsession or Cat Power’s “Dreams”, indie artists have always had a soft spot for one of the best major-label acts of the ’70s. Now comes the inevitable indie-centric tribute record, but (aside from its impressive lineup) one name producing the project promises an excellent set as a whole: Randall Poster. He’s the music supervisor behind one of last year’s best tribute LPs, Rave On Buddy Holly, and Wes Anderson’s right-hand man on the Moonrise Kingdom OST, among other efforts of note.
This time, Poster recruited Antony Hegarty to sing “Landslide”, the Kills to take on “Dreams”, Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo and Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis for “Albatross”, and others. Also among the tracklist (via Direct Current) is a Blake Mills-produced cut by Billy Gibbons and a band perhaps misspelled in the press release as Super Wolf. Something tells me, given a few typos spotted, they might mean Superwolf, the duo Bonnie “Prince” Billy and Matt Sweeney formed in 2005. Just Tell Me That You Want Me is due out August 14th via Hear Music/Concord, check out the full list below. Update: The New Pornographers’ cover of “Think About Me” is now streaming after the jump.
