“If I die before my time, bury me upside down,” Chan Marshall sings in the chorus of “Cherokee,” the second cut from her new Cat Power album to reach our ears in as many weeks. A fairly bleak way to open a record, for sure, but — as with “Ruin” and charity single “King Rides By” — Marshall goes down fighting, seeking out some transcendence amid a slick, Philippe Zdar-mixed groove. The mood isn’t too far off from the bittersweet vibe on her last set of all-original material, The Greatest. This time, though, you can sort of dance to it.
