It may be all quiet on the Blur and Gorillaz front of late, but Damon Albarn hasn’t slowed down in his solo career one bit. Today alone, Albarn went acoustic live on Later… with Jools Holland after unveiling another cut off his new collaboration with legendary soul/R&B singer-songwriter Bobby Womack. One week ahead of the arrival of Dr Dee — his new opera/concept record inspired by John Dee that was formerly co-helmed by Alan Moore and Jamie Hewlett — Albarn brought the hushed number “Apple Carts” to BBC television with a quintet backing group in tow. First up, check out his interview with Holland and the performance segment below:

Now for an excellent, soulful jam debuted this morning by Bobby Womack: Richard Russell and Damon Albarn produced the title track, “The Bravest Man in the Universe,” and the full LP due out on June 12. Upon our first couple spins, this material seems to pick up right where Womack and Albarn’s Gorillaz collaboration left off. Great news, considering “Stylo” was one of the best cuts of 2010, and even better news when taking the fine lead single, “Please Forgive My Heart,” into account. Albarn’s sonic footprint is all over this stuff, for sure, but there’s no question that Womack’s own signature knack for unforgettable melody and inspired performance is as vital as ever. Give it a spin here:
