Let’s head back into the barn with Neil Young & Crazy Horse for our second taste of the reformed legends’ new LP, Americana. Once again, the boys keep things very loose and uninhibited for their first-take keeper on a traditional folk tune. Just as the song has been interpreted dozens of ways since being traced back to roughly the late 19th century, Young’s “arrangement continues the folk process with a new melody, a new title and a combination of lyric sources.” Said new title comes in the form of “Jesus’ Chariot,” inspired by the biblical second coming. Anyone who’s heard “Oh Susannah” will have an idea of what to expect, but for the rest of you: get ready to feel like you just wandered into an all-night jam session at Neil’s house — tape rolling and vacuum tubes about to overheat — below:
