Following glimpses at the new menacing and more familiar, quaint side of Regina Spektor’s latest LP, What We Saw from the Cheap Seats, comes a cut that spans a broader range of her output thus far: “Small Town Moon,” an introspective ballad punctuated by jazz-inflected vocal runs that give way to a sing-a-long-ready climax. No dolphin noises this time, but unexpected vocal theatrics do abound, making for quite the colorful palette condensed to just 3 minutes. In short, if you’re a Regina fan already, this will be an exciting taste of what’s to come on May 29. If you’re being introduced to her stuff just now, though, maybe starting with a tune like “Samson” and working your way to the present would be a safer route.
