As it turns out, Feist and Mastodon’s new Record Store Day release goes well beyond the novelty of folk-pop-meets-metal, with both acts turning in solid proof today that this mutual appreciation society is both inspired and genuine. Leslie Feist’s menacing take on “Black Tongue,” in particular, offers a refreshing unhinged angle from the singer-songwriter while keeping the smoky, jazz-inflected tone of her voice we’ve grown to know and love intact. Meanwhile, Mastodon turn Metals cut “A Commotion” to 11, complete with the dedication to precision and adrenaline-fueled rhythm section you could expect from the genre. We’re still 12 hours away from the launch of Record Store Day 2012, but Feistodon is an awesome start:
