While watching Patrick Wolf’s latest official clip (an animated attempt to “wake the sleep of color” in “The Falcons”), a different video from his unflinchingly optimistic Lupercalia LP caught my eye: “Together,” performed live in a studio with a string quartet. This moving take on Wolf’s new pop ballad is so good that it recalls a personal favorite behind-the-scenes Frank Sinatra clip, in which Ol’ Blue Eyes records his hit “It Was a Very Good Year” single in just one take with an orchestra. That’s an ambitious connection to make, I’ll admit, but even if it feels like a stretch: check out Wolf’s impressive growth as a singer above.
