While watching the trailer to director Sean Durkin’s Martha Marcy May Marlene the other day, one moment caught me by surprise: actor John Hawkes (Me and You and Everyone We Know, Winter’s Bone) singing a chilling cover of Jackson C. Frank’s “Marcy’s Song.” As it turns out, Hawkes, who conjures up a bit of both Frank and Townes Van Zandt in the performance, has a long history in music in addition to his lauded film career. The brief clip in the preview alone made me want to check out the psychological thriller, but in the meantime, here’s Hawkes playing an intimate live version ahead of the film’s wide release.
