From her 1994 take on the Rolling Stones with Björk to a Peggy Lee tune, to Howlin’ Wolf, to her blistering version of Dylan’s “Highway ‘61 Revisited,” PJ Harvey’s cover song selections are always an ambitious effort. Her latest classic cover is a fine addition to the list: “Lonely Avenue,” a hushed, yet relatively faithful, rendition of an old rhythm-and-blues tune penned by Brill Building legend Doc Pomus and made famous by Ray Charles in 1956, streaming above from this year’s Ben Waters-led Ian Stewart tribute album, Boogie 4 Stu. In case you missed it, we’re spinning the Stones (reunited with bassist Bill Wyman) covering Dylan on that record, as well.
