Ending a two-year live hiatus, during which frontman James Mercer focused on his Broken Bells side project with Danger Mouse, the Shins have returned with new songs, shows, and an LP on the way. Not only did San Francisco’s Outside Lands festival announce the addition of the beloved Portland band to their lineup yesterday, but Mercer and Modest Mouse’s Joe Plummer — who replaced Jesse Sandoval as the Shins’ drummer in 2009 — unveiled a new song recently as well. “We’re working on a new record and this is one of the songs that should be on there,” Mercer told the audience during his encore at a benefit concert for Portland’s Puddletown School last month.
